HTS Metal-Insulated technology development at CEA towards HFM 20 T dipole magnets.

In the framework of High Field Magnet program, CEA Paris-Saclay, in collaboration with CERN, is developing Metal-Insulated (MI) winding technology for dipoles. This approach allows to reduce the amount of material required for the coils and simplify the protection at the cost of a less controlled current path.
The talk will describe the 2-years project and details the work done during the first year for the racetrack coils developments. Firstly, the numerical tools will be presented, focusing on a PEEC-R (Partial Element Equivalent Circuit for Racetrack) developed in Matlab for studying the transient and quench behavior. An electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal FEM model developed in CASTEM environment will also be detailed. Then, technological developments for racetrack winding and assembly will be addressed including the electrical connection, technological characterization and winding approaches. Finally, the work plan for the second and last year will close the seminar.
