Present status of 14T+ magnet design 30m
Speaker: Gloria Bellini (Ministere des affaires etrangeres et europeennes (FR))

      13/03/2024: Follow-up meeting

Participants: Juan Carlos, Ariel, Ezio, Nicolas Peray, Susana, Gloria and Jose

      Agenda:

      -          Ariel to present an update on the status of the 14 T magnetic optimization.

      -          Gloria to present an update on the status for the 14 T mechanical design.

       ARIEL’S UPDATE:

§  Slides show the first analyses by Ariel regarding the dependency of (i) Loadline margin, (ii) Bap/Bpeak and (ii) b3 on:

o   Inner layer pole-turn conductor to aperture distance

      o   Outer layer pole radius

      o   Midplane insulation thickness

      o   Interlayer thickness

For the computation (made in ROXIE with a simplified iron geometry), the number of conductors in the inner layer of the coil has been fixed to 23.

§  The results confirm that the initial design provided by Gloria was already well-optimized and fulfilling all design criteria.

§  According to the plots, midplane insulation thickness and interlayer thickness can be slightly modified to further optimize the 2D design. The analysis will be completed, and a final proposal will be made in one of the following meetings.

§  To conclude, ROXIE was used to optimize the coil design using genetic algorithms and dividing the upper layer in two blocks. The analysis will be completed by computing the coil efficiency for each case, since it seems that to fulfil field quality requirements, we are removing conductor in areas where it is efficient.

§  Next steps: Optimize a design where the outer layer is not aligned with the inner one in the midplane. Quantify the gain on conductor.

      GLORIA’S UPDATE:

§  Slides present a detailed summary on all the work performed up to now.

§  The proposed cross-section fulfils the design criteria.

§  The following information needs to be added to the slides:

o   Size (outer radius) of the magnet. We need to check if we can reduce it and how much. Today the size of the aluminium shell is such that provides a 50% increase in pre-load during cool-down.

o   Check on what happens when inner and outer poles are glued together. Impact on pole stress and deformation (since the pole will be stiffer)

o   Check dimensions of the vertical pad and flared ends. Can we gain something here?

      ACTION ITEMS:

      §  Ariel:

o    Complete the analysis and make a final proposal.

o   Compute coil efficiency for the designs obtained by ROXIE using genetic algorithms.

o   Optimize a design where the outer layer is not aligned with the inner one in the midplane. Quantify the gain on conductor.

      §  Gloria:

o   Size (outer radius) of the magnet. We need to check if we can reduce it and how much. Today the size of the aluminium shell is such that provides a 50% increase in pre-load during cool-down.

o   Check dimensions of the vertical pad and flared ends. Can we gain something here?
