      Background
HEPiX questionnaire in Autumn 2010 (see DPK talk to HEPiX at http://indico.cern.ch/contributionDisplay.py?sessionId=4&contribId=22&confId=92498). Little pressure to use IPv6 in Europe or North America (apart from US Federal CIO directive). First HEP IPv6-only sites likely to arise in Asia or South America or will Virtualised services contribute everywhere? HEPiX agreed to create new working group - Phase 1 to take place during 2011. IANA allocated last IPv4 addresses on 3 Feb 2011. APNIC first RIR to run out on 15th April 2011. RIPE NCC expected next.

Mandate and aims of HEPiX IPv6 working group
Do not duplicate activities of NRENs and Networking experts at Sites - not just yet another IPv6 activity. Phase 1 during 2011 is to consider whether and how IPv6 should be deployed in HEP (e.g. for WLCG). Readiness and Gap analysis (HEP applications, Security issues, System monitoring tools, End to end network monitoring) Run a distributed HEP testbed (to explore all the above issues). If we agree there should be a Phase 2 (deployment)... Propose a timetable and analyse resources required. Implementation plan will be required (e.g. advice on end system and firewall configuration - during transition period).
    • 4
      Membership of the working group
Need to include a range of expertise (networking, system managers, HEP application developers, Middleware, Security, ...)
    • 5
How should the group perform its work?
Face to face meeting(s)? Regular phone/video conferences Email list (we have that), wiki, indico agenda pages, ... Sub-task leaders
