Fractionally Charged Particles at the Energy Frontier: The SM Gauge Group and One-Form Global Symmetry

Room: 4/2-037 - TH meeting room Thinking either about the one-form global symmetry of the SM or the global structure of its gauge group reveals the importance of searching for particles with electric charge a multiple of e/6. In particular the discovery of such a particle would give nonperturbative information about the Standard Model and rule out some or all of the minimal theories of unification. I'll discuss collider phenomenology and constraints on such particles, and emphasize their discovery potential. Additionally, I'll begin the talk with a gentle introduction to generalized global symmetries, the modern framework for thinking about symmetries in field theories.
