Active Photonics: Revolutionizing Random Number Generation with Sequre Quantum

by Dr Marcin Pawlowski, Dr Paulina Assmann

Europe/Zurich
Description

While quantum random number generators offer to deliver true randomness, intrinsic to the quantum theory, ensuring in practice that they work as advertised, i.e. that the output's entropy is sufficiently high, remains a challenge. It is also a well-known fact that insufficient entropy can compromise the results of the tasks it is used for, for example, the security of cryptographic keys or the accuracy of numerical simulations. To deal with this problem, self-testing generators can be employed, which certify the quality of the randomness produced in real-time. While such generators have been tested in the labs for over a decade, their complexity and extremely low rates of random numbers' production made them very impractical. In this talk, we present a new method of self-testing random number generation driven by the active photonic technology of Sequre Quantum, which allows for high and certified entropy production while being relatively easy to use in practice. We begin with theoretical considerations and move to the presentation of a device operating in real-life conditions.
