Greek Cultural Presentation: The captivating antiquities from a pivotal sanctuary related to the royal house in Aigai, the first capital of the Macedonian Kingdom 30m

The sanctuary of Eukleia is an archaeological site very near to the palace and the theatre in the first capital of the Macedonian Kingdom, Aigai (modern Vergina). The foundation of the sanctuary forms part of an overarching building project that included the aforementioned structures and can be attributed to royal patronage, most possibly that of Philip II. Besides, in the cult place the imprint of the royal house is testified through the inscriptions mentioning Eurydice, mother of Philip II, as dedicator and Eukleia, the goddess of fair fame, as receiving deity. Apart from the structures of the sanctuary (temples, altar, porticos), more buildings in its surroundings are of public character and it seems that the broader area is the forum of the ancient city. Stunning finds have been discovered in the sanctuary: marble sculptures and, most unexpectedly, three burials in silver and gold vessels. One of them might be related to the illegitimate son of Alexander the Great, Heracles.
