Meeting with IT, QTI, OQI

Present: Alberto Di Meglio, Alexia Yiannouli, Ana Godinho, Antonella Del Rosso, Sofia Vallercorsa, Tim Smith, Dante Larini, Zoe Nikolaidou

1)        Introductory remarks

CERN was part of the organizing committee of the World Quantum Day (April 14). In other words, CERN prepared the ground for the year of quantum, as the Quantum Day is its precursor. When the OQI started, CERN stepped out to avoid potential conflict of interest.

Action: Dante is to follow up with the organisers to seek more information about how to plug into these initiatives.

2)        Possible topics/themes of interest for events

·      Next generation triggers: even though it is very technical and has a smaller audience – it is a project founded externally and showcasing how CERN can work in different settings and for different domains. This could be a nice contribution or an event in itself.

·      AI: we could also discover the link between AI and Quantum.

Tim pointed out that OQI focuses on how science can benefit others, contrary to CERN whose research is mainly for the sake of research.

Regarding collaborations with the agenda of public events, Antonella suggested for us to share with them the formats for them to suggest more concrete proposals.

Action: Dante is to share the agenda and the events which are more advanced in terms of preparation.

3)        Sparks! 2025

Antonella is asking for the specific format of Sparks! 2025. Will it be multiple speakers giving short (15’) talks? More context is needed to make suggestions.

Ana advised to keep the format for the time being, as it would serves as a first concrete step toward the preparation of the event.

Sparks! 2025 theme: Quantum (incl. ethical, social, political aspects). Tim shared that this is perfectly aligned with OQI’s main objectives and activities. Tim can also easily identify speakers.

A suggestion was made of having a common Sparks-OQI event, as CERN hosts and runs the OQI as well as Sparks. Zoe shared that we would need to check with Pascale if Sparks’ sponsors would agree with this idea.

Sofia suggests that the event needs to showcase practical problems and be grounded on a very practical point of view. A common idea therefore would be to showcase “upstream” quantum scientific advances, including ones developed at CERN, and connect it to a “downstream” part, i.e. how their applications trickle down to societal impact, considering ethical and political aspects (ex: quantum computing to model and facilitate the achievement of sustainability).

Action: Dante is to share a draft concept of Sparks! 2025 to gain more concrete feedback

Action: Dante is to discuss with Pascale whether a closer collaboration with OQI would be acceptable for the sponsors (Rolex).

4)        Communications

·      OQI is interested in sharing their communication strategy with us.

·      Through their communication channels, they can promote our events, by underlying that we have also activities for the wider pubic.

·      A reminder was shared to pitch public events during the editorial newsroom sessions.

Action: Zoe and  Alexia are to exchange further on a collaboration with comms
