A large aperture dipole for testing accelerator and fusion cables at high field

A new facility for testing advanced superconducting cables in high transverse field is under development by the US Department of Energy, as a joint effort by the Offices of High Energy Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences. The facility is under construction at Fermilab while LBNL is contributing the large aperture Test Facility Dipole (TFD) to generate a background field up to 15 T over a uniform length of 75 cm. The magnet is based on a Nb3Sn block coil with flared ends, operating at 1.9K. Its bore geometry combines a rectangular profile of 144 mm by 94 mm and a circular profile of 106 mm diameter. Transverse mechanical support is provided to the coils by an aluminum shell over iron yoke. Steel rods and endplates provide axial support. This presentation will cover the main design elements, progress to date and next steps.
