Muon Collider ESPPU Editorial meeting

Europe/Zurich
Chris Rogers, Daniel Schulte (CERN), Federico Meloni (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DE))
Description

The document will contain two parts. The first is an assessment of the concept, its status and the progress of work. The second part is an R&D plan for the next decade. You can find the document in overleaf: https://www.overleaf.com/3781273291qffchfrfbbwz#c64fce

To do for this meeting:

  • We will focus exclusively on the Evaluation Report
  • Write on the overleaf an initial list of main messages expected for each section.
  • For the sections expected to inherit from the Interim Report, please just specify the expected changes/differences

Minutes:

Federico introduces with slides, deadlines and requires for style (i.e. labelling and bibliography).

LR: For those not familiar with LaTeX, request to use Word and ask for it to be imported. Approved by FM.

Physics (PM)

PM: Content in document already. Main topic they want to update is neutrinos. Tried to consider how external people will view it.

FM: Entrypoint for some of our audience, so trivial things are still clearly communicated and enthusiastic.

Interface

FM: Questions of what defines Interface. Copied text from interim report. Updates from synchronising with new physics targets in Ch. 2. Reporting on State of the Art. New Delphes cards updated. Comment on how multiple detector concepts means we can aim for different physics targets.

AL

Start from Interim Report in terms of interaction region.

Important to use same data across the sections/subsections. Latest data from workshop in the middle of previous month.

FM requests to dump this in bullet points so we remember.

Detector (DL) [request more than 6 pages]

Straightforward. Overview ½ page to describe what we have done so far, 3 TeV detector concept. 2 pages of Description of 2 detector concepts for the 10 TeV nozzle. Picture of the detector and write.

Summarising performance in a table for the two detector concepts.
For the technologies, may struggle to get under 6 pages.

Question. AL how much more than 4 pages? Above 6 we should discuss. Only constrained in the executive summaries.

Accelerator (CC)

Should ask section authors.
Proton Driver (SJ) Main messages for the proton complex and figures. Is already more than 2 pages
Accelerator (HD) RT copied over the text from the Interim Report. Want to do updates of simulation models for the two beams. 4-6 pages looks approximately reasonable. Will stay with layout from previous report for the key messages.

Collider (CC) Will address the key challenges for this collider design. Restructure interim report. FM: Planned activities goes to R&D section.
SJ: Where does the staging discussion go? I.e. 3 TeV.
CC: We are doing 10 TeV with HTS technology. Relaxing beta*, meaning luminosity reduction, but will allow for a feasible lattice. Would ask DS where the staging goes.
SJ: Everything is for the ultimate 10 TeV machine, but could include section with the two different options. Could follow the same?

FM: Space for this in the initial summary.
SJ: 10 TeV is mostly just conceptual.
CC: Is a section on siteing at the end.

Detailed discussion on what muon collider we explicitly are writing about. I.e. 3 TeV or 10 TeV, what magnet designs. Expressions that our magnet apertures are much too high.

Technologies

Magnets (LB): lots of progress and material for recent conference. Received substantial push-back on assumed magnet performance. Need to tune to something which is in line with the expectations from the community. Six pages would be very tight. Agreed to come up with an estimate of optimal page budget by next meeting.

Power Converts (Fulvio): 6 pages should be good. FM: Request to see what is different from the Interim Report

RF (DG): should stay within 6 pages, had met to discuss. Will add information on RF for the cooling cell.

Cooling Cell (LR): Actively performing integration of the cooling cell. Not a solution to stay in 0.8 meter within the RF cavity. Currently 1.2 meter

Target (AL): Need to discuss with Rui. Adapt from there. For radiation shielding for the collider there is little change. Some update in the target area. FM: Request for bulletpoints of opinions.

Cryo ():

Vacuum (JS): Will copy overleaf information. Updates mainly affect windows and absorber. Did more experiments to write up.

Instrumentation ():

Radiation Protection (CA): Away last week. Start from IR with additions, realistic geometries and effect of movers. Update on geoprofiler tool. Could probably make 6 pages.
CC: Will there be conventional radiation protection? CA: Nothing critical with it. We can for the demonstrator. Could keep the IR message of conventional protection.

Movers ():

Action items:

RT: Please include thoughts on the overall muon collider baseline design under the Muon Collider Design: One-page summary section. Currently based on parameter report.

FM: Please fill in tables for the R&D input.

You can upload them next week ahead of time in indico.
