Request for a 40kV HV Coaxial Cable

Europe/Zurich

Present

Jose, Mark, Wilfried, James (CERN), Christian Pfeiler, Guido Schiergers (DRAKA / Prysmian )

Meeting

Specififcation for the cable:

  • High voltage: >= 40 kVDC
  • Current: >= 5 mA
  • Cable geometry: coaxial
  • Outer diameter: 10mm (need to check connector if different diameter !)
  • Cable length: 3 x 140m (left Pt4) and 3 x 230m (right Pt4) . Total length 1110 m
  • Radiation hardness test/validation needed: NO
  • Halogen free needed: YES
  • Fire retard (no PVC) needed: YES

DRAKA do not have a cable in their catalogue that meets this specification.

Closest cable to the spec. is rated to 20kV - same cable that we already use for the PS & SPS BGI's ( SCEM 04.31.51.775.2 ).

This cable was tested to 50kV, but DRAKA mentioned that their test equirement is limited to 50kV.

DRAKA agreed to propose a technical design by the end of next week (W46).

Minimum order quanity for a new cable design is 1.5km.

Question of how to validate cable - CERN proposed in-house test of a prototype cable (ABT have the equipment.)

DRAKA point out that we would need to test at least a few hundred meters of cable for a meaningful test.

Post Meeting

Wilfried pointed out that we have a 60kV rated cable from Heizenger, which is halogen & smoke free - but not fire retardant.

Wilfried contacted Jose to draw his attention the Heizenger cable. Jose commented that it's only the outer jacket that is not acceptable (PVC) and will contact the company to see if a version could be produced with an alternative jacket material.

Wilfired proposed to validate the DRAKA 20kV cable - available in the CERN stores - with the ABT(?) test facility.

We could also think to test the full chain in the lab with the PS-BGI Vertical.
