Excellence drafts ready by mid next week (Thursday)

Leadership
Therese: good to put the coordinator together with the leader at NTNU
Heidi: NTNU, HVL and UiO are all in place to be either leader, host or both. Is it correct that UiA and UiB are not in contention for these role?
UiA is already involved with other applications, happy to lead work packages
UiB is happy to be package leader
Oslo happy with the proposal
Anna: coordinator needs to have an administrator locally
Heidi: hard for a new centre to build relationships with CERN from scratch. Need to take advantage of the NorCC centre being at UiO so makes sense for the coordinator to be there. Could hire additional people.
Heidi: researchers are used to teleworking but not really coordinators. Don’t need to decide it now. Maybe we can go back to our institutes to get more information on local support for administration
Eirik: the host and the leaders is what unlocks the extra funding so this is more important than the administration
Heidi: need to verify good balance between offered PhDs with the work being proposed in the different work packages
Eirik: people should check that the PhDs/PDs being proposed are realistic and fit in the proposal
Eirik: possible to have a coordinator who is 50% research
Having coordinators spread around is messy
Agreed that the host will be NTNU.
Are: some important things can be started once the host is decided, e.g. budgeting, interactions with administrators &c

Everyone is happy with it? —> Yes
Name:
Physics-accelerated AI Research At The Exascale
Table of students
Good to add it to the overleaf, participants should check
Eirik: should in-kinds be counted? —> Yes
Anna: specify both but separately
Ali: regarding matching co-funding by CERN, what is the limit on numbers?
Can’t cofinance without an agreement with CERN. Not automatic. Need agreement with CERN group in question
No limit as long as you have a connection with a group at CERN who is willing to co-finance half a PhD and your group has the ability to finance the other half
Seyed: in terms of budgeting is there a difference between post docs and PhD?
PDs can be 3 or 4 years according to this call, but at UiA it means 3. So in terms of budgeting there is no difference
Eirik: have three different kinds of PhDs. NFR, in-kind, “coming from the side”
Seyed: Agder will only support PhDs at Agder, not NTNU. So need multiple columns
Therese: need extra columns. Also note that the cofonds with CERN need to be justified by CERN’s needs
Heidi: CERN needs to have the funds as well, not always the case
Anna: some topics are more suitable for the various types of PhD than others
Budget
Therese: no ATLAS membership fee for PhD —> to be confirmed
Follow up with Heidi about whether James/Eirik will need to go 100% to this centre if NorCC isn’t funded beyond 2027
Someone in the administration should calculate the Frikjøp.
Are will start up this process internally with NTNU
AOB
Are: Heidi has made an indico page for the workshop with industry. Will upload the presentations. Not comfortable opening up the user presentations.
Eirik will protect using the AI-billions mailing list
User workshop was very successful. Asking the potential users to write letters of intent -
Application should be finalised by Christmas to allow the users to write their letters
