Description
A few years ago, primarily young scientists of the DESY particle physics division founded a forum for sustainability to enhance awareness of the environmental impact of research and to propose measures to reduce the energy footprint. Since computing is a substantial consumer of resources in particle physics, the forum initiated a series of workshops on computing with the aim of training scientists in best practices for efficient computing and software. Roughly twice per year, there is a workshop for beginners and newcomers to DESY with an introduction to the local computing facilities and hands-on exercises employing tools like ROOT, Git, and HTCondor. About once per year, there is a workshop on a slightly more advanced topic, such as software testing and performance, or using and building containers. The workshops are organized by a team of scientists from the IT department and from the experimental groups. All exercises are constructed along examples that are typical for particle physics and employ, e.g., CMS Open Data.
