KI milliarder 6th December 2024

Introduction/general (Eirik)

  • Conclude that we delay the deadline for sending to partners/institutes/CERN until THURSDAY NOON.

  • Executive summary

  • Table of deliverables for each work package

  • Resources for/from institutions

  • Should we add to the table of people how much each person needs to be “bought”

  • Yes, need to add two new columns: NFR contribution and in-kind contribution [ADDED by Eirik]

  • Are: before putting in a full budget need to see how many people are envisioned

  • Summing up the numbers of FTEs from each work package so far comes to too much, need to be reduced/normalised and clarified how much each person will be in-kind &c

  • Anna: numbers by Monday evening?

  • Matthias: how does it work with own contribution? Profs will devote some work time (e.g. 20%) to the centre?

  • Anna: need to argue with the institute, once the project has been approved. If people who are paid from NorCC are moved to this project the project has to pay - NorCC can’t pay. Institute can only pay for time of professors

  • Are: good understanding of the own-contributions from the different institutions.

  • Updated excellence not yet in place [NOW IN PLACE]

  • As much as possible should be done by Thursday for sending to HVL, final draft unlikely by Thursday

  • Risks should be listed in general and for specific work packages, but then be collected together in a table/general subsection

  • Svein: looking at this from the outside, hard to understand the vision

  • Based on the old Excellence part, new version to be added after this meeting

  • Need to add a “teasers” early on. Should also be (partly) addressed by the new version.

  • Ali: Need to have deliverables in a table

  • Farid: Need to have milestones

  • Will come in a Gantt chart, Nadia working on it [PLEASE SEE HER EMAIL]

  • Each work package should put in start/end dates

  • Need an executive summary / project summary

  • Global editing (style, structure) can wait until the end

  • Document is too long so we will need some strategy to condense it. Please edit with a view to shrinking it…

  • Section on data and computing power needs to be addressed: James will look at it

Work package 0

  • Added text to the overleaf. Anna added comments in red

  • Should be in reasonable shape by Thursday

Work package 1

  • Getting closer to a draft, need to add references &c

  • Deliverables and risks aren’t done yet

  • Will add existing text by Thursday

Work package 2

  • James/Eirik working on it over the past days, getting into a decent shape

  • Still some things missing but should be there by Thursday

  • Risks/deliverables

Work package 3

  • Defined three tasks, need to add references, deliverables &c

  • Should be possible for a reasonable version by Thursday

  • Estimate of PhDs/PDs?

  • For task 1,2: 1-2 PhD

  • Task 3: 1-2 PhDs

  • Maximum 3 PhDs

Work package 4

  • Added a new task (Equinor), added a task

  • Need to add references &c

  • Need to do some synchronisation between 2 and 4

  • Quite a lot of risks… maybe best to comment them out for the HVL draft

Work package 5

  • Working on integrating the parts together

  • Will add deliverables and risks

  • Task 5c: should do some merging with work package 2

Work package 6

  • No-one present

  • They are working on the text, will discuss at HVL

Implementation chapter (Therese)

  • Please read, will need some adjustments following the excellence part

  • Table with postdocs &c needs to be in this part, not in task 0. Anna will move it.

  • Didn’t yet write measures for exploitation and communication. Think of something to fill in there

Organisation

  • Collaboration with other work packages

  • UiB initiative

  • Others?

  • How to collaborate with other centres should be generic, not specific, because we don’t know which centres will be funded

  • Can reference WP0 in this part

  • Work package distribution as shown in the slides

  • Need to fit Dieter and ALICE in…? Tracking?

  • Need to be careful about putting things in that are just for CERN

  • Needs to be discussed URGENTLY

  • Are: wise to have two work package conveners, distributed across institutes

  • Are: Heidi suggested that administrative coordinator should be at NTNU and the educational should be at UiO to work with Eli in NorCC.

  • Farid: should be demonstrated that it is the best place where each person should be, not where existing centres are

  • Are: HVL should have the deputy leader

  • Are: total number of project leaders will be greater than 15 so some CVs will not be submitted; need to be strategic about which CVs are sent in. Should include some professors from NTNU

  • Anna: If you send a CV then you need to say what the person will do… Need a role for each CV

  • Therese: named person from each task as well as work package leaders

  • Farid: need to take account of conflict of interest. WP leader can also lead a task, but avoid (e.g.) having people in the board who execute the work

Summary

  • Numbers of people (NFR/own) from each institution by Monday evening

  • Each participating institute needs to write a letter of intent, as does CERN. Also NextGen project. WLCG? IT@CERN?

  • Eirik and Are will look over the document on Tuesday

There are minutes attached to this event. Show them.
