Dear CMS Colleagues,
The CMS Thesis Award Committee, on behalf of the Collaboration Board, is calling for nominations of Ph.D. theses written on research associated with the CMS experiment for the 2024 CMS Thesis Award. This is the 26th year of the CMS Thesis Award Program.
Information about the program and the current membership of the committee is available in the Thesis Award page.
Eligible theses for the 2024 CMS Thesis Award must have been successfully defended between November 1st, 2023 and October 31st, 2024.
The nomination deadline is December 20th, 2024 at 23:59 (CET).
The nomination material, including 1) a nomination letter, 2) a CV of the thesis author, describing the author’s major achievements in CMS, and 3) the link to the thesis manuscript, as approved by the institution awarding the Ph.D title, shall be submitted electronically following the instructions provided in the page Submission of thesis nomination material.
Thesis supervisors, or other CMS collaborators, who closely followed the thesis work, are encouraged to submit thesis nominations. Theses written on any CMS-related work (physics analysis, simulation, computing, detector development, engineering, etc.) are eligible for nomination.
Theses written in a language other than English must be accompanied by an accurate translation in English of the original thesis content in its entirety so that the Committee can fairly and accurately evaluate the thesis work.
The nominated theses are evaluated by the Thesis Award Committee based on a) originality of the thesis author’s personal contributions, b) impact in CMS and HEP of the research conducted by the thesis author as part of their thesis work, c) clarity and quality of the manuscript.
Theses selected for the award represent a guide for new students engaging in research with CMS, as well as a lasting value for all CMS collaborators, in that they provide an accessible but in-depth documentation of a diversified set of CMS-related research methods (physics analysis, simulation, computing, detector development, engineering, etc.).
In order for the Committee to fairly and accurately evaluate a nominated thesis, the nomination letter should specifically address the original contributions by the thesis author in the context of their thesis work in CMS. The CV of the thesis author should include: (i) a list (with links) of presentations in CMS groups meetings, internal notes, conference papers, and any other written material documenting the contributions of the thesis author in the context of their Ph.D. thesis work in CMS ; (ii) a short description (up to one page) of the contributions that the thesis author considers to be their most original and impactful work in the context of the CMS group/project they contributed to.
The recipients of the award will receive an award certificate, a money gift (500 CHF) as well as a contribution (up to 1500 CHF) to travel expenses for presenting results of their thesis work at an international conference, within one year of receiving the thesis award, in agreement with the CMS Conference Committee. The award recipients are also invited to present a summary of their thesis results during a plenary session of the CMS Week following the announcement of the award.
Theses selected for the CMS Thesis Award are recommended for publication in the "Springer Theses" series that recognizes exceptional Ph.D. theses in the physical sciences. Only theses written in English will be eligible for the Springer program.
In case of questions concerning the Award and the nomination procedure, please check the list of Frequently Asked Questions or contact the Committee chair, Greg Landsberg.
Sincerely,
The CMS Thesis Award Committee
