The 230 000 processor cores and 15 000 servers run 24/7. Over 90% of the resources for computing in the Data Centre are provided through a private cloud based on OpenStack, an open-source project to deliver a massively scalable cloud operating system.

11:30 → 12:15 Visit to Antimatter Factory

The Antiproton Decelerator (AD) is a unique machine that produces low-energy antiprotons for studies of antimatter, and “creates” antiatoms.
A proton beam coming from the PS (Proton Synchrotron) is fired into a block of metal. These collisions create a multitude of secondary particles, including lots of antiprotons. These antiprotons have too much energy to be useful for making antiatoms. They also have different energies and move randomly in all directions. The job of the AD is to tame these unruly particles and turn them into a useful, low-energy beam that can be used to produce antimatter.

MEDICIS (30 min)
CERN’s MEDICIS facility contributes to medical research by producing novel radioisotopes, elements with too many or too few neutrons to be stable. These radioisotopes not only help diagnose cancers and other diseases, but can also deliver precise radiation doses to treat diseased cells without destroying the surrounding healthy tissue.

CIPEA (30 min)
The CERN Innovation Programme on Environmental Applications (CIPEA) has been launched to harness CERN’s innovation potential in environmental technologies. The objective of the programme is to encourage CERN experts to come up with ideas for environmental applications based on CERN’s technologies, know-how and facilities.
