Notes from Target configurations discussion:

  • Assessed 3 main target scenarios:
    • Scenario 1: 1.5m CDS target + 0.5m of Fe proximity shielding + 4.5m==>2.5m of magnetised hadron absorber
    • Scenario 2: 1.5m W target + 0.5m of W extension with proximimty shielding
    • Scenario 3: 2m W target with no proximity shielding
  • Concluded scenario 1 with a W target is the most likely option and should be further investigated.

Actions:

  1. Provide an updated geometry baseline of the target complex with the 1.5m long W target and the reservations for various elements downstream target according to engineering contraints. This would be the base for further optimisation and substitue the CDS one (ACTION:  by early February).
  2. Need to optimise between length of target and thickness of rear shielding and the gaps between different elements and thickness of structural elements.
  3. Pablo to verify the dimension between the CDS target front face (of the 1st core block) and the front face of the hadron stopper and get the agreement from Richard that this parameter is to be kept baseline for any target optimisation.
  4. Claudia to investigate the effect in the prompt and residual dose rate by using copper for rear shielding around the target instead of stainless steel.
  5. FLUKA model will be updated according to the new refernece distance between teh front face of the W and the beginning of the hadron absorber magnetic area: this would start after point #1 is completed.
