26th EP Magnet Working Group Meeting
Attending:
Present: Matthias, Macej, Jarl, Valentina, Arturo, Pierre Ange, Anna, Burkhard, Xavier, Laurent Roy, Benoit
Zoom: Arnaud Foussat, Thomas Zieckler
Arturo gives.a presentation on the Alice 3 superconducting dipole
Burkhard asks about the approval of the project. Management is waiting for the TDRs. Italy didn't decide yet. A new descoping was proposed, to remove the RICH detector. The hope is to have by the end of the month a good statement, but it's not an approval. The next approval window is April 2026. Brazil won't start the magnet construction until Alice 3 is approved. A collaboration agreement needs to be written with Brazil, but ALICE 3 needs to be approved before this.
Benoit: this week as TRATOS managed to coextrude NbTi3 with a copper strip there were some issues with the copper strip, but probably the problems wouldn't be encountered with a real Rutherford cable. The company invested a lot, building two new buildings, where new coextrusion lines could be installed.
TE launched a call for tender for the strand. A Chinese company won the tender but there are still some production issues to be addressed.
Arnaud: asks who is responsible for the final engineering file. Arturo confirms it's the Brazilian institutes.
Jarl gives his presentation on the EP Magnet Area
Xavier reports that the LHCb Magnet has been working well, expected for before Halloween there were electrical perturbations that brought the magnet down. The day after there was a complete blackout on Halloween night on ATLAS magnet. with slow dump of the magnet and it was not possible to reinstall the cooling on the vacuum system, which required an urgent intervention. The vacuum was restarted late at night.
There was just now a slow dump of the toroids due to a glitch in the Meyrin network that affected the cryo system.
Benoit reports an event two nights ago, with a fault on a PLC on the mixed water distribution. There was a flow reduction, but the issue was solved just before the magnet would go in dump.
Last question from Xavier about what will happen to the ALICE dipole. Arturo replies that it will be cut into pieces, since the rig is not available anymore for transporting it.
There is some discussion with Laurent and Pierra Ange about maybe looking at the status of the flexible tubings for LHCb and ALICE.
