Aim: Discuss more in detail two tasks related to the basic optics design underlying most other studies carried out by ABP and required as well as input by hardware groups.
Main points of the discussion:
- Ghislain presents an ambitious work program for the task “Collider Optics and Layout”. The main objectives are (i) to push the optics design for the proposed solutions for the collider optics to a state such an informed choice can be made, (ii) continue the transition move from the conceptual optics design to technical implementation (communication with equipment groups) and (iii) ensure that all optics versions are properly made available via a repository with sufficient documentation. The related WG does not intend to decide on the lattice solution to be adopted, but rather to prepare for a decision by the managements. There is a list with stakeholders and contributors. Clarifications on available resources to be further refined.
- Rogelio presents the main tasks of the tuning working group. Some of the main subjects treated by the tuning working group: increasingly realistic tuning simulations with misalignment (promising results with misalignments in arc, still very tight tolerances for elements around IPs) including beam based alignment, impact of unwanted multipolar components, development of scenarios for commissioning (starting with threading through machine with relaxed optics and, iteratively, correct errors and improve settings, and move to optics with smaller b*) and contributions to studies at SuperKEKB. Team with a good share of members at CERN and working at collaborating institutes available.
- Collaboration with SuperKEKB:
A clarification and justification of CERN involvement and guidelines might be useful. As many of the concepts used for SuperKEKB are applied as well for FCC-ee, it is mandatory that either SuperKEKB performance is improved or the basic limitations are understood and mitigated for FCC-ee. The need of a written agreement with KEK is mentioned and discussed.
- Some discussion how urgently the basic optics solution has to be selected. Many equipments are similar for several optics solutions. Some studies by equipment groups (e.g., impact of separated quadrupoles probably needed for the LCC optics but with lower gradients on overall cost or cost of different supporting structures needed for different solutions) are needed as input to choose a lattice solution. There is a mismatch between lattice design still being at a conceptual level and the requirement to move to implementation and technical design.
- Standard lattice files of machines with imperfections and tuning:
For many (almost all), standard lattice files of machines with imperfections (misalignments, unwanted multipolar components) and their correction, based on the procedures developed by the tuning working group, would be very useful. This would allow more realistic simulations of possible limitations. Some discussion on the number different cases (sets of imperfections and tuning) for a given optics and whether all are needed.
- Gianni reports that a full matching sequence using X-Suite of the LCC optics is available and is expected to be presented soon (beginning of May).
