Description

Abstract: Radiation therapy has been rapidly developping over the past decades and advancements in accelerator technology have played an important role on the enhancement of radiotherapy methods. In this seminar lecture we aim to present basic accelerator characteristics and give an overview of irradiation techniques. While LINACs and eLINAC-Bremmstrahlung X-Ray production will be mentioned, we focuse on elements of hadron therapy; therefore, the physics of cyclotrons and synchrotrons will be presented. Additionally, we will give an overview of the techniques which facilitate the formation of the Spread-Out Bragg Peak and the Pencil Beam Scanning technique.

This seminar is conducted within the framework of the Applications of Ionising Radiation in Biology and Medicine course of the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences (N.T.U. Athens).
