ROOT Team Meeting
News:
-------
- spike in issues, now at same level as in may
- 6.36 released on Monday, fixed >200 items
- 2 items outstanding, blockers for experiments:
- 1 by ATLAS, submitted 3 days before the release; fixed in the weekend (Danilo), waiting for a review to merge
- 1 by ALICE, that skipped from 6.32 to 6.36; Danilo trying with Jack to find out what it is
- after june 6.34 will be removed from the CI
- received a question about timelines of root releases; we have been clear for 6.34 but it's hard in general to say how long we'll maintain a release.
Idea: signal which releases we provide only "legacy support" for. This is also in our interest (Wouter from ePIC says he wants to use this to facilitate
moving to more recent root releases).
- we can't straight up drop support for an old release that some experiments are based on / took data with.
- Bertrand: it's really hard to declare something "EOL" while we still see some small experiments use ROOT 5 (which we even patched stuff for relatively recently).
- Vassil: I think it's a good idea; need to understand where we draw the line: when moving version some people will always be left behind;
- Stephan: maybe put in that document which versions are in the CI
- Danilo: but this moves the question on "what to put in the CI"; I agree with Bertrand that we should be careful of what we say we support.
Shift
--------
Bertrand -> Danilo
- some different results for compression on different platforms; fixed by using builtins.
- Danilo: need to get more clarity on this as it manifests in many platforms now.
Meetings
---------
- I/O meeting: new Fermilab summer intern: Shovan (working on the Phlex framework with RNTuple - details still unclear)
- No statistical analysis meeting
- PPP by Jamie 2 thursdays ago
- No LIM
Topics
---------
Liaisons:
- ATLAS: Florine: went to the Analysis Model Group meeting; they announced the ROOT workshop; nothing else very relevant.
- ALICE: Giulio asked to investigate memory usage from ROOT;
- LHCb: Silia: I was invited to DPA WP3 meetings; it went well, talked about efforts on RNTuple, discussed analysis use cases;
takeaway: an email was sent to the analysis group liaisons and they were told to get in touch with me if they want to migrate to RDF.
- CMS: Vincenzo: CAT meeting this week, I will attend. There was the CMS Patatrack hackathon 2 weeks ago, participated with Jonas H. and Jack.
They renewed the request for SOA support in RNTuple.
- Need to see when we can dedicate effort to this / who will work on this.
