The precision path to new physics: EFT measurements in CMS 1h

The impressive agreement between all phenomena studied so far at the LHC and the Standard Model suggests that the energy scale for the on-shell production of new particles may lie beyond the current reach. Yet, this does not mark the end of the search for new physics at the LHC. Instead, off-shell production of new particles could subtly modify observable quantities, leaving measurable imprints that can be captured within the framework of effective field theory (EFT).

CMS is actively pursuing dedicated searches for such EFT-induced effects, alongside a broad program of cross section measurements that can also be interpreted in this framework. In this presentation, we show a statistical combination of CMS measurements across multiple sectors — including the Higgs boson, electroweak vector bosons, the top quark, and multijet production. Together, these results place constraints on 42 independent EFT operators and open the door to more comprehensive studies, identifying promising regions of parameter space still left to probe.
