BOND-M Unit Length

Europe/Zurich

In this meeting we discussed about the strand yield length at CERN in order to have all information for the definition of the BOND-M coil unit length.

  • In our length range (~350-700 m), there is no significant impact on usage-efficiency for the strand. We could choose any unit length in this range.
  • Lengths below the minimum required for MQXFB are considered leftovers, since they cannot be used. For us, it would be very interesting to lie in a range where we could use this leftovers for the production of our cable.
    • See attached message from Simon.
    • If leftovers were assigned to BOND-M, it might in principle be feasible to make 3–4 coils targeting 12 T, or 1–2 coils of an intermediate design.

Furthermore - cable needs shared with SCD (Jerome, Thierry & Simon):

BOND-M:

  • 3UL around 400 m, Q2 2026
  • 2 more UL, to be confirmed at a later stage. SCD can put them as optional in Q4 2026
