Cosmological effects from additional states in QED

I will review the covariant quantization method for the electromagnetic field and discuss different scenarios where we can find difficulties with its consistency. To overcome these problems, alternative quantization methods in which the Hilbert space of the physical states is enlarged will be considered. These additional physical modes, could have non-trivial effects in cosmology.
