Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are important principles for successful organizations and institutions including the scientific enterprise. Attacks on EDI by the US government others have led to the elimination, retrenchment or rebranding of initiatives. EDI remains a priority of the European Commission through its equality strategies. In this talk I will describe why EDI has been the major focus of my career for two decades. I’ll then discuss the context for EDI within Europe and within international scientific collaborations. The talk will conclude with suggestions for steps that individuals and organizations can take to promote well-being and success for everyone, but especially for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, immigrants, and low-income people.
