Description
After introducing the (accelerator) components of a full medical facility, I’ll discuss the synchrotrons key features and main components, with focus on the small, low-energy machines for medical applications.
I’ll talk about closed orbit, beam rigidity, RF cavities, acceleration in synchronism with magnet ramp-up, dipoles to bend and quadrupoles to focus the beam.
Finally, I’ll give you the key concepts of transverse beam dynamics (linear optics) using as little formula as possible: phase space representation, tune, Hills equation, beam ellipse, emittance and periodic beta function.
