Dear All,
Speaking with Alessandra Martini, I was asked about our developments on the Exploitation Plan.
I told her that we would be ready to introduce some first elements into our Plan for Using and Disseminating the Knowledge, which is due to be delivered by the end of June.
So far nothing really significant had been told neither in our DoWs, nor in the Dissemination Strategy Plan, concerning the exploitation plan of HeC, and I would like to remind you of the comments issued at the end of the EC revue on this important issue: “There is a clear potential exploitation for this project, although the commercial prospects have not been clearly developed in the current DoW. Most of the exploitation is oriented towards dissemination and potential benefits for health and health care systems. A more targeted exploitation plan should be considered to fully exploit the likely results of the project.”
These comments were followed by more general remarks on the whole of the dissemination strategy, which we should also be fully aware of: “The plan has been drafted, although it is more a collection of potential options than actual planning with a clear communication strategy behind it. The consortium is requested to re-visit the planning and to design a more concrete planning, including identification of targeted audiences, dissemination instruments and dates. It has also to be more comprehensive in geographical terms. There are only two partners involved in the dissemination, both from the same country. Other partners, from different countries, should be involved in this important activity.”
The Guidelines to reporting in FP6 indicate that we “should provide an overview, per exploitable result, of how the knowledge could be exploited
or used in further research (if relevant). This should be created by the project coordinator obtaining input from each contractor that owns the knowledge and has an active role in its exploitation.”
The Guidelines contain also an Overview table, showing some generic examples of how it should be filled in:
Exploitable Knowledge (description)
Exploitable product(s) or measure(s)
Sector(s) of application
Timetable for commercial use
Patents or other IPR protection
Owner & Other Partner(s) involved
1. New superconductive Nb-Ti alloy
MRI equipment
1. Medical
2. Industrial inspection
2008
2007
A materials patent is planned for 2006
Partic. X (owner)
Partic. Y, Partic. Z, Poss. licensing to equipment manuf. xyz
Even though our project is still at a relatively early stage concerning exploitation developments, I do not think that we can go on postponing starting to tackle this issue.
Some restructuring of our efforts, in order to take into account the recommendation of involving also “other partners, from different countries”, should be included into next DoW III.
All this “important activity”, as the EC reviewers qualified it, should now go beyond the simple dissemination strategy (which certainly still needs to be improved, enlarged and better specified), and include also a growing commitment to provide an analysis and definition of current or potential exploitation objectives.
I also attach a first draft of the updated version of the Self Assessment Plan.
I look forward to meeting you in Paris, or at least to speaking with you over the phone during the meeting, if you cannot attend.
Please make use, in this latter case, of the two telephone “windows of opportunity” (at 12:00, or at 15:00) which were announced in the last email sent by Antonella.
I would very much appreciate if those who cannot attend could kindly let us know in advance at what time they would prefer to join the meeting over the phone.
Kind regards
Edwin
