ASFAP Symposium closeout meeting — there were many useful comments from many people, but I mentioned only the salient ones here.
- Kétévi presented a suggestion on how to move forward after the symposium to implement the comments and suggestions received, and have the report ready for UNESCO.
- Simon will create a googledoc where to collect all the comments received during the symposium so that we may easily follow progress on their implementation.
- Ghita suggested that when a comment / suggestion is implemented, it should be marked as done.
- We will implement the comments / suggestions received during the symposium by January 31, 2026. This may include budget scenarios and timeline to "first physics" even if not finalized. It was suggested to develop budget and timeline for the short, medium and long term, with milestones and costs. This may be revised until late when the report is ready for distribution.
- Peter and Oumar will discuss and advise on how to handle the the Observer's feedback in the report. We will hear from them by January 31, 2026 or earlier.
- Then, the Steering Committee will update the executive summary by February 15, 2026.
- We aim to deliver the report to UNESCO for editing, formatting, translation, and readiness for distribution by February 15, 2026.
- While UNESCO is working the report, we will focus attention on recommendation prioritization and definition of actionable items.
- We will engage the advisory committee and the supporting institutes about implementation mechanisms.
- Ann raised the necessity for a course on engagements with policymakers and lobbying. Petra offered to give such a course in 3 online sessions of 1.5h each. Kétévi will contact Petra to schedule this course.
- Iyabo raised the necessity to re-engage the AU in the progress on ASFAP. We agreed to do this thru NASAC, AAS and UNESCO.
- Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
