Notes from the Summer Hackathon @ CTAO: Live Notes

Visiting the UK

Please ensure that all attendees check the entry requirements for visiting the UK: https://www.gov.uk/uk-border-control

Many attendees may need to obtain an ETA before arriving: https://www.gov.uk/eta

You can check if you need an ETA here: https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa

An ETA fact sheet is available at: https://homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta-factsheet-november-2025/

Accommodation

South Kensington is an extremely touristy area, but alas somewhat upmarket. We don't have any recommended hotels, people usually use the standard booking platforms. It should be noted that the week 16. - 20. of February is a school holiday in the UK, which might affect availability.

Directions to Blackett Lab

Nearest underground ("tube") station is Gloucester Road (Circle/District/Piccadilly lines).
The only external entrance to Blackett Lab is on Prince Consort Road.
We recommend the CityMapper App to navigate through London. Most navigation apps will recognize Blackett Lab as a landmark, otherwise you can search by postcode: SW7 2BW. (Note: If you just search for "Imperial College", you will be directed to the other end of the campus. )

Public Transport

All public transport in London can be paid by tapping in (bus & tube) and tapping out (tube only, buses have a fixed fare no matter how far you go) with your bankcard or phone. A daily cap is applied automatically. If you are unable to use your phone or bankcard, you can buy Oyster Cards at any major tube station and use those instead. For details, please see https://tfl.gov.uk/

If you are arriving by plane, you can also use your bank card to pay directly if you take the standard train (i.e. not the Gatwick or Heathrow express) from Heathrow or Gatwick using the tap in-tap out mechanism. For transport options to and from Stansted or Luton, please see the airports' respective webpages.

Uber is available in London.

Dinner

A pay-your-own dinner had been booked for the 18. Feb at 19:00 at the Mall Tavern in Notting Hill Gate: https://www.themalltavern.com/
The Mall Tavern is about 30 min on foot, 20 min by bus from Blackett Lab.
