LS3 activities : Vacuum – Alexandre Sinturel
Alexandre presented the planned activities concerning vacuum in AD and ELENA machines. There is a large number of actions planned, requiring all the AD machine sectors to be brought to atmospheric pressure. Due to the availability of the required team, the bake-out operations will only be possible to start early 2028. The most critical sector is expected to be 2B, where the stochastic cooling kickers are located, which have developed leaks on the water-cooling circuit in the past. Particular attention will be required there.
The MCP of IPM in sector 4 may be changed, this needs to be confirmed by BI.
W. Hofle asked if the stochastic cooling pick up cryo heads could be kept cold some days after the machine stop, to perform tests. It should not pause any issue.
In ELENA, the works concern mainly the ion source vacuum system, that will be exchanged to become CERN standard, and repairs on transfer lines SEMs and ZQNA’s. The ELENA ring will not be affected.
HYPER tests at TELMAX - results – Lena Kirchner
Lena reported on the HYPER project and in particular on the tests performed with BabyHYPER at TELMAX.
The object is to build a device that will allow the production and analysis of
hypernuclei, by trapping and annihilating pbars on low pressure target gas. The new experiment will make use of a large fraction of the PUMA setup, and of innovative
curved silicon detectors that are planned to be operated in the experiment vacuum.
The tests at TELMAX aimed at testing these detectors, in particular the cooling in vacuum, and to build-up experience with a pbar beam operation.
The BabyHYPER setup made use of some of the infrastructure of the PAX experiment, left in place by the collaboration for the convenience of HYPER team. The Multi Mini Bunch (MMB) beam configuration was used for the tests, and its structure was clearly visible. A long tail was visible on the “normal” beam structure that needs to be investigated.
After some adjustment, it was possible to steer the pbar beam onto the 80 µm filament target and reconstruct the vertices of annihilations. The cooling of the detectors in the vacuum was measured, although the vacuum level itself was dominated by a leak in some electronics feedthrough (the In Vessel vacuum was not affected as it was separated from the Out Vessel vacuum, where the detectors were located).
Overall, a very successful and useful test campaign ! The involved CERN teams were warmly thanked for their involvement and dedication.
News from machine operations – Lars Joergensen
Lars showed the summary of AD and machines operation over the last weeks. A very good operation period overall, with nice stability and record intensities measured: 6.4e7 pbars injected in AD, ~1.3e7 pbars per bunch extracted from ELENA to the experiments. The TOF implementation in the stochastic cooling system allowed an interesting gain in the first flat top.
The main issues encountered concerned a ZDFA generator for ELENA and the AD magnetic horn plus the usual DR.QUAD trips for AD.
BASE manage to load the reservoir trap with pbars, that will be used for precision measurements during LS3, and PUMA is preparing for a transport trial sometime in August (TBC). It is often that more than 4 experiments are requiring beam simultaneously. It is therefore reminded that the beam request server should be off in case no beam will be taken.

A water leak in the cleaning lab of 393 triggered the fire brigade intervention as it was flooding the ALPHA atomic clock nearby. This was due to a tap left open, and the jet hitting outside the basin. A fix should be considered there to avoid this happening again.
The ALPHA storage barrack is planned to be moved during 2nd week of October to allow shielding opening and magnets extraction.
