Presentation by Maarten about NA60+ magnets

Question to Enrico from Maarten, which operating current on the magnets?

  • Enrico: Not yet discussed, although more bending power would appear attractive.

 

Nicola (question to Maarten): Is the geometry of the experiment well-defined?

  • Maarten: The surroundings of MEP48 are expected to be cramped, for MNP33 it is less so.
  • Maarten: There are two possible configurations (low / high energy configuration). --> Two different geometries foreseen, with differences in terms of iron shielding.
  • Nicola: Likely two magnetic field mapping campaigns would be needed in that case.

 

Maarten (question to Nicola): What is planned for the works on MEP48, MNP33, etc?

  • Nicola: For MNP33, we will bring to our workshop the bottom part. The part with the rail would go to EHN1. The rest of the magnet would then be installed on top.
  • Maarten: Then we need to figure out a solution for storing the rest of it without damage
  • Michal: Even without the bottom part, the rest of the magnet can be stored safely. But a space is needed, also in light of its weight (>30 tons)

 

Nicola opened the procedure provided by Pierre-Ange Guidici

  • It was discussed that the rail mounting has to be rotated in order to allow an adjust of magnet positioning at a later stage
  • Pierre-Ange proposed a technical visit
  • Nicola mentioned that in Bld 181 there is a machine for making the coils
  • Nicola: Timeline to be discussed later, depending on approval of the experiment.

 

Maarten asked a question to Christoph: What are the next steps?

  • Nicola: What about budget / funding, for example for making the coils? (Rough estimate: ~200 kCHF for making coils)
  • Maarten: Not yet discussed
  • Enrico: The current timeline as discussed is that the first beam is expected in 2031. The precise timeline is yet under discussion, but likely the TDR would be completed in 2028.
  • Christoph: That implies a formal discussion may be expected in 2028/2029?
  • Enrico: Yes, that is our hope.
  • Enrico: From a technical perspective, the experiment looks to be straight-forward without big surprises expected, for example in terms of detector technology.
  • Christoph: What else could such a magnet be used for, for the sense of making coils?
  • Nicola: Since Pierre-Ange retired, making coils has not been done. 
  • Christoph: Perhaps it may make sense to make coils in the coming time, for the sake of developing / retaining magnet expertise.
  • Christoph: I will do my best to follow up.
  • Maarten: Perhaps this activity may be supported in terms of the "New Roadmap Initiative", although this remains to be confirmed.
  • Maarten: Flexible connections are needed for example for water and electrical connections.

 

Planning for works for MEP48

  • Nicola: We can see about the technical aspects for winding coils. We can follow up with Francois.
  • Pierre-Ange: The coil size has an outer diameter of 1.6 m. 
  • Nicola: We have the CAD model
  • Pierre-Ange: I believe that the conductor has an outer dimension of 18 mm.
  • Maarten: What are the space requirements for making coils
  • Pierre-Ange: Likely 10 m x 5 m, i.e. 50 m2.
  • Pierre-Ange: Likely the most challenging part is vacuum impregnation
  • Nicola: We will need electricity and compressed air.
  • Maarten: What is the power requirement?
  • Nicola: We do not know the precise geometry of the coil. I did various simulations to get a better understanding.
  • Maarten: It is important that we get an idea, for example for getting the power converter requirements.

 

Planning for MNP33:

  • Nicola: The planning for MNP33 should be more straighforward
  • Maarten: I will make a note for my colleagues that adequate space will be assigned, including for assembly.
  • Nicola: Likely the assembly would not require additional space for assembly, as it can likely be assembled in-situ.

 

Field maps and preliminary costs:

  • Nicola: To be discussed later
  • Michal: What about reusing piping etc?
  • Maarten: When do you need an answer?
  • Michal: ASAP
  • Maarten: Okay.

 

Matthias: What about controls, interlocks etc?

  • Nicola: Likely this would be looked after by SY-EPC
  • Nicola, question to Xavier: No controls by EP-DT, right?
  • Xavier: Right
  • Nicola: We can check during commissioning whether the sensor are okay, whether more sensors are needed, etc.

 

Maarten, question to Enrico: Any further questions / comments?

  • Enrico: I understand that, if conditions are met, works on MEP48 may start relatively early
  • Michal: As soon as you know where to send it, let us know.
  • Christoph: Do we have space in the workshop?
  • Nicola: This should be Francois to tell us.
  • Nicola: Perhaps the modifications can be done in Prevessin? In that case, moving the bottom part of MNP33 may be avoided. Then the magnet may be stored in PPE136.
  • Michal: For now we send MEP33 to PPE136 (Bld. 887).
  • Maarten: I can show you later where this is.
  • Maarten showed the storage location on gis.cern.ch.
  • Xavier: Where is the place to make the coils?
  • Nicola: Can we do it in Prevessin? Currently MEP48 is on the Meyrin site.
  • Pierre-Ange: We will need a crane
  • Nicola: Makes sense to discuss this with Francois.

  • Matthias: Nothing to report
  • Nicola: We mapped the magnetic field of SM1 + SM2 of AMBER(/COMPASS). We are preparing for a mapping campaign in Mainz
  • Xavier: Nothing special. We are working on LS3 activities
  • Pierre-ange: Nothing special
  • Jarl: Nothing special
  • Lukas: We did mapping (fun but long). We used 9 newly developed probes in combination with the old Felix-probes. I am very happy with it. Worked very well, reliable, easy to use, very precise. The results of the new and old probes were consistent at low field. We are still analysing the results at higher fields. Still some weeks are needed for the analysis.
  • Valentina: Nothing special. We are working on the control card for the ATLAS quench heater excitation system. 
  • Anna: I attended a conference to talk about EP R&D works, where I gave two talks.
  • Nicola: Any news regarding Tratos?
  • Anna: New tooling is under preparation. The next step will involve the use of a Nb-Ti/Cu Rutherford cable.
  • Michal: We started dismantling the MNP33 magnet
  • Lukasz: Nothing special to report.
  • Maarten: Nothing special to report.
  • Enrico: Nothing special to report. Thanks everyone for this meeting.
  • Hans Danielsson: How heavy is MEP48?
    • Maarten: I understood that the yoke splits in half, where the individual pieces are less than 40 tons
    • Nicola: But a support is needed for craning it out. A quotation was preciously requested some years ago (~10 kCHF), but likely needs to be refreshed.
    • Hans: It is very difficult to find documentation. It was previous part of the APPLE experiment.
    • (Hans showed a picture of the APPLE experiment in PS170).
    • Nicola: The coils look different, so perhaps the coils were recoiled in the last decades.
