In this talk, I will discuss the assumptions and challenges underlying N-body simulations for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). I will present a first-principles derivation that provides a map from a microscopic particle physics description of SIDM to a representation of macroscopic simulation particles, for theories in the short mean-free-path regime. An effective cross section naturally emerges from this procedure, which depends on the fundamental particle physics cross section. Such mapping can facilitate the exploration of SIDM signatures at galactic scales.
