Welcome to the first session of our series dedicated to the Ritmo con Señas (Rhythm with Signs).
This method was developed in Buenos Aires by Argentine musician and composer Santiago Vazquez as a way to organize collective musical improvisation through a shared vocabulary of gestures. It draws inspiration from traditional percussion music and makes it possible for people from different backgrounds—even those with little or no musical experience—to play improvised music together.
A conductor uses hand and body signs to give real-time suggestions to the musicians, facilitating various aspects of the music.
While the method can be quite sophisticated in terms of technique, the focus is not on the technical performance of each individual, but on the experience of making music together, regardless of the composition of the group.
So, be prepared to keep it simple but groovy, to listen as much as possible, and to share music with people of completely different skill levels and experiences.
Time-schedule:
- 19.00 -19.30: introduction to the method for non-musicians
- 19.30 - 20.00: introduction to the method for musicians
- 20.00 - 23.00: Common open jam with RcS
Notes
- The jam is open to everyone (listening and/or playing), regardless of whether they are registered on Indico. However, in case of overcrowding, participants who attend one or both introductory sessions and are registered on Indico will be given priority.
- Some instruments will be available, but feel free to bring your own instrument (both percussion and melodic instruments are welcome), keeping in mind that not everything can be easily amplified.
- If you will be joining only one of the two introductory sessions, please contact claudio.cipriani@cern.ch to specify which one.
- Please unsubscribe if you won't be able to come.
- Something to drink / eat is always welcome :)
