News

  • ML4EP meeting: discussed coordination things. Bit of input on how we can further promote ML loading for training (batch generation). No concrete plans/use cases yet.
  • Philippe coming to CERN this week.
  • Discussion on having a release. But the issue https://github.com/root-project/root/issues/20816 is better fixed in 6.38 than have a breaking change in 6.40.

* Forum was silent, builds OK, need to disable a test in 6.36.

Meeting Summaries

  • I/O meeting:
    • Issue with CMS and memory consumption in RNTuple compared to TTree, related to autoparsing. RNTuple does more than TTree in terms of type discovery. Need to check case by case.
    • rootcp in C++
    • curl based http client code in ROOT, need Linux and mac platforms with these turned on (without davix). Windows is already a test platform.
    • RNTuple rootjs has some issues. Need some follow-up work on this.
  • Statistical Analysis Software: String expression gets ijtted excessively - need to figure out what to do here. Vincenzo recently merged a PR that drastically changes this [to be discussed offline].
  • Python-C++ Bindings: Nothing to report.
  • PPP:
  • No meeting last week.
  • Florine and Jonas giving talks in the coming weeks.
  • Someone working with mp-units library contacted to have a PPP talk about this. Will also give a general talk in HSF seminar.
  • LIM: No meeting this week.

Liasons' Report

  • ATLAS:
    • Nothing to report.
  • CMS:
    • Summary report of the ROOT's users workshop. Focused on IO, RDataFrame, ROOT7.
    • Positive feedback for pip and conda install.
  • ALICE:
    • Nothing to report.
  • FCC:
    • Physics workshop: Heavy on physics and detectors. Only had 2 computing and software sessions. Talk on ROOT was well received. Quesitions about the new histograms. No one had problems/issues.
    • Few observations during the workshop:
    • No one was interested in pip install, becase it was in key4hep and didn't need that. They just source key4hep stack.
    • Biggest trouble they have is when they do event procession then to ML training and back
    • Dedidcated talk on ML in key4hep
    • 2 people mentioned about a bug in TTree reader. Open since 2 years but the bug is much older.
  • LHCb: Silia was in Paris and gave a talk on ROOT. Refer Weekly status report for detailed report.

Round Table

  • Vassil:
  • Busy with conceptualizing the work items to give out in summer.
  • There is a person in china using cppinterop in clang-repl. He wants to do undo (unloading), there are few missing things in clang-repl.

  • Few people interested in gsoc projects.

  • Philippe:

  • Nothing to report. Too long of a list of things to talk about.
