GLM/GHM shielding discussion

Europe/Zurich

Present: Hanne, Guilherme, Tiago, Carlotta

  • Carlotta: presents slides by Elodie Aubert (HSE-RP) and need of shielding from GLM/GHM areas towards RILIS office/sas. Recommended shielding options:
    • 20 cm concrete
    • 6 cm steel
  • Guilherme: would consider the GLM/GHM beamlines as versatile, so new ideas not currently foreseen could be implemented in the future. Notes that generally the strongest collections would be done at GLM, because it’s easier. Shielding above GLM/GHM would be good for not yet planned/foreseen scenarios of experiments.
  • For GLM: the option of 2.4-m high ceiling (given a shielding made of a 6-cm steel plate resting on the 2.4-m high concrete blocks surrounding the GLM area) seems viable. However Guilherme suggests to place the steel plate on steel feet resting on the concrete blocks, that would give a bit more height:
    • 2.55 m = I-beam height; 6 cm = steel plate height; 2.55 m – 6 cm = 2.49 m effective height over GLM area.
  • For GHM, two options were discussed:
    • adding steel layer on the RILIS office wall facing GHM (structurally viable according to Tiago, while keeping the RILIS office a light/removable structure)
    • make a roof also on GHM
      • Guilherme is in favour of the second option (roof over GHM), which would be preferable from an RP standpoint.
      • Guilherme asks to increase the height of such steel plate relative to the max possible achievable height for the GLM area.
      • Guilherme already sent height requirements and GHM equipment drawings to Vincent.
      • Guilherme asks Tiago if it’s possible to make some pre-drilled threaded holes in the steel plate to add equipment in the future that could hang from the roof. Tiago needs to know the load for this. Currently with the small crane they lift ~60 kg. But a bit more margin should be considered for possible future equipment. One could also attach cryogenic pipes and cables/cable trays to the roof.

  • Carlotta to send Tiago a sketch of the steel plates resting on feet (a bit higher for GHM, as high as possible for GLM, considering the 2.55 cm height of the I-beams)
    • Sketch of proposed shielding solution attached to this Indico page.
