In a few months, parts of CERN's accelerator complex will become construction sites for the duration of Long Shut down 3 (LS3) as the High Luminosity project (HL-LHC) begins its deployment this summer. But what does luminosity actually mean, and what will change at the LHC with the introduction of this major upgrade?

Markus Zerlauth, Project Leader of the HL-LHC project, will give a talk for Guides to help them answer visitors’ questions in the future. He will begin by introducing the main building blocks and equipment systems of the present LHC and then explain the main changes in the LHC tunnel and new underground caverns during LS3 in preparation for the first operation run of the HL era, due to start in 2030.

 

The talk will take ~45 min. with time for questions afterwards.
