Description
The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) is a cornerstone of Europe’s decision-making process for the long-term future of the field. The 2026 update should – according to the remit defined by the CERN Council – identify a preferred option for the next flagship collider at CERN and prioritised alternative options to be pursued if the preferred plan turns out not to be feasible or competitive.

Over the past year, the ESPP process has been carried out with a large community involvement.
The European Strategy Group (ESG) has considered several proposals for a future flagship collider. Based on the physics potential and the technical feasibility of the various colliders, and taking input from the community into account, the ESG has expressed recommendations for consideration by the CERN Council. A clear recommendation for the realisation of the Future e+e- Circular Collider (FCC-ee) at CERN has been made. In this colloquium, the rationale for the recommendations is presented.

Bio:

Karl Jakobs is a Professor of Physics at the University of Freiburg / Germany. His main activities of research are the study of the Higgs boson and the search for extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. He participated in experiments at CERN (UA2, ALEPH, and ATLAS) and at the US laboratory Fermilab (DØ). From 2017 to 2021 he was Scientific Leader (Spokesperson) of the ATLAS Experiment. From 2021 to 2023 he was the Chairperson of the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA), and in 2024 he was appointed as Secretary to organize the new update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics.
