Description

This workshop, organized under the umbrella of the COMETA COST Action, will gather theorists and experimentalists exploring multiboson processes as a window to new physics beyond the Standard Model. The program will highlight recent theoretical developments in new physics model building and effective field theories, precision calculations, novel experimental strategies, and machine learning techniques to enhance BSM sensitivity in processes with multiboson states. Building on these themes, the agenda will feature plenary presentations, contributed talks, and a dedicated discussion session designed to provide space for constructive feedback between theorists and experimentalists.

        BSM in the process $VV\rightarrow H^* \rightarrow VV$ can arise in two ways: As an effective extension of a composite Higgs at low energies or by a deviation hinting at a close-by resonance at high energies. It is thus necessary to control the standard model in these regions to high precision. We present novel standard model backgrounds, alongside lattice estimates for them, which arise from a complete treatment of gauge invariance in the standard model. We will give a detailed discussion of the origin of these corrections. At low energies, we provide estimates of the effective standard model size of the Higgs, which is of order $(40 ~\mathrm{GeV})^{-1}$. At high energies, we give first results for the PDFs for the weak sector, which need to be taken into account for an adequate estimate of the cross section.

        New Bosons from a Deformed Massless-Up-Quark Solution to the Strong CP Problem: Is the Axion Hiding in Plain Sight? 25m

        In a recent paper, Murayama proposed a GeV-scale axion scenario in which the up-quark mass arises dynamically from the QCD chiral condensate, which also spontaneously breaks a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. If correct, the QCD axion may already be hidden among the known pseudoscalar resonances in the 1-2 GeV region, accompanied by a scalar partner predicted by the same framework. The proposal, however, faces a serious challenge: it generically predicts too large a neutral-charged pion mass splitting. I will discuss attempts to overcome this problem and show that a structural obstruction remains: the new Peccei-Quinn spurion breaks the accidental isospin symmetry of the chiral Lagrangian, generating enhanced higher-order effects and sizable distortions in pion-pion scattering. Although a successful resolution appears unlikely, a definitive assessment of the scenario would require lattice simulations of the resulting deformed QCD theory.

        Probing Z' Models at Future Colliders 25m

        Several models of grand unification predict the existence of an additional gauged $U(1)_D$ symmetry, which gives rise to a new heavy neutral gauge boson $Z'$ at the TeV scale. In general, the Standard Model particles may be charged under this new symmetry, with gauge coupling $g_D$, and the $Z'$ can exhibit a kinetic mixing $\epsilon$ with the hypercharge gauge boson as well. Future experiments, such as the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) and the Future Circular Collider (FCC), can constrain the values of $\epsilon$ and $g_D$ at the experimental scale. In this talk, I will describe how the bounds for HL-LHC and FCC can be derived within an effective field theory framework, while also highlighting their interplay with gauge coupling unification at the unification scale through renormalization group running.
