Dear all,
A short update following our checking of extension leads and plugs this morning. 95% of what we found was excellent, appropriately sized cables well connected. The remaining 5% of cables we checked had some issues such as:
-
Cables undersized for the circuit breaker. As a rule of thumb, the minimum cable cross sections for the phase, neutral and earth conductors in extension leads and supply cables should be:
-
10A : 1.5mm2
-
16A : 2.5mm2
-
32A : 6 mm2
-

These 32A plugs are not connected to 6mm2 cables, replacement required.
-
-
Poorly terminated cables - strands of cable not inside the connector, strain relief not connected to the sheath of the cable (see photos), terminals not tightened (!).
-

The strain relief has been put on the conductor insulation, not on the outer sheath.
-

The conductor was inserted into the terminal, but not tightened.
-
-
Overloaded cables - this is what happens if you don’t follow the rules in 1. This could have started a fire.
-
-
Cables that were poorly terminated have been fixed (about 10 in total). Cables that are undersized or have been overloaded have been marked for removal (purple tape) and the plugs removed.
In general we didn’t plug them back in after our intervention, to prevent unwanted restarts of vacuum pumps etc. so please check your setups.
The following zones were not inspected this time, either by prior agreement or because things were powered on:
CRIS
IDS
Miniball
ISS
I’ll contact you individually to schedule a check when it is convenient.
Best regards,
James
