        Roundtable Discussion 30m

This session brings together leading voices from academia, industry, and innovation policy across the Nordic region to explore the evolving role of big science in driving technological development, economic growth, and cross-sector collaboration. With perspectives spanning research, industrial engagement, and national innovation strategies, the discussion will highlight how large-scale scientific infrastructures—such as CERN and the FCC—can act as catalysts for industrial participation and societal impact.

        Speakers:

        Ari Kokko (Copenhagen Business School)
An expert in international business and innovation, bringing an academic perspective on industrial ecosystems, global value chains, and the economic impact of large-scale research infrastructures.

Catarina Sahlberg (Big Science Sweden Programme Director)
A key figure in connecting industry with big science organisations, offering insights into structured national approaches for industry
        engagement and capacity building.

Jussi Manninen (Executive Vice President, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland)
Representing applied research and innovation, with a focus on translating scientific excellence into technological solutions and industrial applications.

Lassi Noponen (Director General, Business Finland)
Providing a strategic policy and funding perspective on how national agencies support innovation, competitiveness, and collaboration with international research infrastructures.

Johannes Gutleber (CERN, European Union and International Organisations Relations)
Extensive experience in the development and governance of large-scale research infrastructures. His work focuses on implementation strategies, international coordination, socio-economic impact studies, and the optimisation of societal benefits arising from investments in scientific infrastructure. He has also contributed to major CERN initiatives illustrating the transfer of fundamental research into societal applications.

Together, the speakers will offer complementary viewpoints on how industry, research institutions, and public bodies can collaborate more effectively in the context of next-generation scientific projects.

Speakers: Ari Kokko (Copenhagen Business School), Catarina Sahlberg (Big Science Sweden Programme Director), Jussi Manninen (Executive Vice President VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland), Lassi Noponen (Director General, Business Finland)

CERN’s Industry Procurement and Technology Department 20m

This presentation offers an overview of how CERN engages with industry through its procurement activities, providing a clear entry point for companies interested in working with one of the world’s leading research organisations. The session will introduce the mission and structure of CERN’s Industry, Procurement and Knowledge Transfer ecosystem, with a particular focus on how industrial partners can participate in the design, construction, and operation of CERN’s facilities.

        Speaker: Josephine Bengtsson (CERN)
      • 11:20 AM
        CERN’s Knowledge Transfer 20m

This presentation focuses on how CERN translates its scientific and technological developments into broader societal and economic value through its Knowledge Transfer activities. Beyond its core mission in fundamental research, CERN actively works to ensure that innovations developed for particle physics find applications in industry, healthcare, computing, and beyond.

The session will provide an overview of:

        • The mechanisms through which CERN technologies are transferred to
external partners, including licensing, collaborations, and spin-offs

        • Examples of successful technology transfer, illustrating real-world impact across different sectors

        • Opportunities for companies, start-ups, and research organisations to
          engage with CERN’s innovation ecosystem

        Speaker: Benjamin Frisch (CERN)
      • 11:40 AM
EP Detector R&D program at CERN: An Early-Career Perspective 15m

This presentation will introduce CERN’s EP R&D programme through the perspective of an early-career researcher, highlighting how young scientists and engineers contribute to the development of the detector technologies needed for future experiments. It will offer a short overview of the programme, followed by selected examples of R&D areas where scientific challenges can open opportunities for innovation, collaboration and industry engagement.

Speaker: Juska Pekkanen (Helsinki Institute of Physics (FI))

Voice from the industry: A roundtable discussion 30m

This roundtable complements the preceding presentations by offering concrete, first-hand perspectives from companies that have recently engaged with CERN. Participants from the Nordic–Baltic region will reflect on their experiences across different stages of collaboration—from initial contact and tendering processes to project execution and longer-term impact.

        The discussion will focus on:

        • Practical insights into working with CERN, including navigating
          procedures and expectations
        • Lessons learned from participation in CERN contracts and
          collaborations
        • The added value of engagement, in terms of innovation, know-how,and international visibility
        • Best practices and technological enablers (e.g. data and AI platforms) supporting large-scale research infrastructures
