Final validation of the ETROC2 for the CMS MTD Endcap Timing Layer upgrade 1h

The CMS experiment is being upgraded with an ETL to achieve 4D vertexing and mitigate extreme pileup at the HL-LHC. A custom ASIC with the size of a 16x16 pixel readout chip (ETROC) is bump-bonded to low-gain avalanche diodes (LGADs) to provide 30-60 ps time resolution for charged particles. The ETROC2 is the first full-size, full-functionality prototype of the ETROC ASIC. Over the past 3 years, the characterization campaign for the ETROC2 and the corresponding hybrids has been successfully completed, including in a mini-system like environment with lpGBT and VTRX+ readout, validating the expected performance in the ETL. As a result, the ETROC2 has become the final version and has recently passed the Production Readiness Review. In this talk, the latest testing results of ETROC2 and readiness for production will be summarized, including beam test results, irradiation tests at CERN IRRAD, yields from engineering run wafers, and full functionality tests of the production version of ETROC2.

Speaker: Jongho Lee (University of Illinois Chicago)
