ATLAS Visitor Center + Synchrocyclotron
CERN
We are announcing the first guided visit for the openlab summer students 2026!
The visit will take place on Friday, 10 July, from 16:30 to 17:40, and will give you the opportunity to explore two of CERN’s iconic facilities:
The Synchrocyclotron (SC) and ATLAS Visitor Centre (AVC).
Students will be divided into two groups and follow a parallel schedule to visit both locations. You will meet your guides at the designated meeting points and walk together to the exhibitions.
To attend the visit, please fill out the registration form and select your preferred group. Registration is mandatory for participation.
Meeting point locations:
| Group A | Group B |

ATLAS from 16:30 to 17:00 |
SC from 16:30 to 17:00 |
| SC from 17:10 to 17:40 |
ATLAS from 17:10 to 17:40 |
ATLAS Visitor Center
The ATLAS Visitor Center has a permanent exhibit with interactive screens outside the Control Room and a 3D movie which explains how the detector works and why the collaboration pursues its quest for fundamental knowledge. CERN also has two permanent exhibitions Universe of Particles and Microcosm that provide unique experiences in understanding the secrets of matter and exploring the mysteries in our universe.
SC
The 600-MeV Synchrocyclotron (SC), which came into operation in 1957, was CERN’s first accelerator. It provided beams for CERN’s first experiments in particle and nuclear physics. At that time, theory predicted that a short-lived particle called the “pion” should decay into an electron and a neutrino, so scientists designed an SC experiment to stop pions and study their decays. In 1958, only a few hours after the start of the experiment, the first images showed clear evidence of this rare decay. This discovery spread CERN’s name around the world.
Note: this is not an underground visit
This visit is exclusively organized for openlab summer students, other participants will not be accepted!
Please register and choose your group before July 9th midnight!
