Description

We're excited to invite ATLAS students and postdocs to the in-person ServiceX Summer Workshop at CERN! Over the course of a single day, you'll get up to speed on what ServiceX is, how to use it, and how to start applying it in your own analysis. Lunch and dinner are included, and it is completely free for participants!

What is ServiceX?

ServiceX is a data delivery service for high-energy physics analyses. Rather than copying entire datasets to user/group directories or local machines, ServiceX retrieves columnar data from remote storage on demand, applies transformations server-side, and delivers only the subset of events and columns the analysis requires in ready to use data formats.

When to Use ServiceX?

ServiceX is well-suited for the following use cases:

  • Datasets remain on centralized infrastructure such as Rucio, and only the required subset of events or columns is retrieved

  • Cuts and analysis selections can be tested interactively without submitting grid jobs

  • Data can be accessed and transformed without setting up a local analysis environments

Preparation for the Workshop

In preparation for the workshop we ask the following things:

  • Avoid researching ServiceX and how to use it, we are hoping to test our docs and curriculum throughout the workshop
  • Have worked on an analysis or within a framework used for analysis
  • Have an intermediate or greater understanding of the tools used for ATLAS analysis
  • Be open minded about implementing new tools into your preexisting workflows!
