The Cosmic Microwave Background II: From primordial fluctuations to angular spectra and real data.: 1st lecture by Daan Meerburg

These two introductory lectures develop the physics of the cosmic microwave background from the expansion and thermal history of the Universe to the anisotropies observed today. We discuss recombination, the formation of the last-scattering surface, and acoustic oscillations in the photon–baryon plasma, before deriving how primordial fluctuations are projected into the CMB angular power spectrum. We then examine how cosmological parameters shape the spectrum, how it is measured in practice, and what present and future CMB observations can teach us about fundamental physics. Simple numerical exercises using real Planck data connect the theoretical discussion directly to observations.
