Title: First Collinear Laser Spectroscopy of $^{16}$O via Molecular Dissociation of CO$^{+}$
Speaker: Sonya Dutton, Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik
Abstract: Many light elements, such as oxygen, remain inaccessible to collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS) because of their high reactivity and tendency to be extracted in molecular form. Collision-induced dissociation offers a route to release these isotopes from molecular beams and make them accessible to CLS.

In this master's thesis, CO$^{+}$ molecules containing $^{16}$O were dissociated through collisions with helium gas to produce O$^{+}$ fragments, which were then neutralized by charge exchange with sodium and studied with laser spectroscopy. The resulting spectra had GHz-scale broadening associated with recoil from the molecular breakup process. The dependence of the fragment yield and resonance linewidth on helium pressure and beam energy was investigated to characterize the method. Lower collision energies and post-collision reacceleration were shown to reduce the linewidth. These results demonstrate that molecular dissociation is a promising route for extending CLS to reactive light species and identify breakup-induced broadening as the primary limitation for high-resolution spectroscopy.
