ASP Online Course Registration: Quantum Computing: an Introduction from First Principles— Applications Open (Deadline: 19 Oct)
by

This twelve-week course builds quantum computing from linear algebra to working algorithms. No prior knowledge of quantum mechanics is assumed; however, solid foundations in linear algebra, basic probability, and working Python are required.
Course Structure & Methodology
Mathematical tools are consolidated at the moment they are first used—vectors, matrices, and rotations in Weeks 1 and 2, the tensor product in Week 4, and number theory in Week 11—allowing students with rusty linear algebra to repair gaps in place.
- Weekly Rhythm: Every week pairs theoretical foundations with either a pen-and-paper exercise sheet or a Qiskit practical.
- Hardware Corner: Each week closes with a short, arithmetic-based calculation on real devices, keeping students grounded in the physical reality of running circuits across different quantum hardware platforms.
- Final Project: A practical project runs alongside weekly materials, requiring steady time investment throughout the term.
- Open Courseware: The course is built on an original open exercise pack with fully worked solutions, authored by Ouissal Moumou and released under CC BY 4.0, alongside the materials listed in the attached documents.
Prerequisites & Requirements
- Mathematics: A first course in linear algebra (vectors, matrices, matrix multiplication) and basic probability (computing simple and conditional probabilities). Being "rusty" is fine, as Weeks 1 and 2 rebuild linear algebra in application; however, students who have never seen a matrix will struggle with the pace. No calculus or quantum mechanics required.
- Programming: Working comfort with Python (writing and executing scripts, calling functions, package management). Qiskit practicals assume this proficiency from Session 1.
- Equipment: A laptop capable of running Python 3 and a modern web browser, plus a stable internet connection for weekly downloads and live sessions. All simulators run locally; no paid cloud computing access is needed.
- Time Commitment: 6 to 8 hours per week (live session + weekly exercises), plus steady dedicated time for the term project.
- Language: English (all lectures, materials, and coursework).
Important Application Notice:
The course is cumulative; the selection process asks for a commitment to attend all twelve weeks to receive credit and a certificate.
Please answer the technical questions and upload your answers during the application process. You will find the questions in a PDF file attached at the bottom of this page.
About the Lecturer
Ouissal Moumou is a quantum computing researcher from Tangier, Morocco, and most recently served as a Research Scientist at Quantinuum in the UK, researching quantum machine learning and circuit execution on trapped-ion hardware. She is a co-author of the UNESCO-endorsed African Quantum Strategy and was named one of the African Quantum Consortium's 50 Women in Quantum in Africa. Ouissal also co-designed an open quantum computing curriculum in collaboration with CERN for implementation across CERN partner universities. She holds an MSc in Mathematics and Foundations of Computer Science from the University of Oxford and a BSc from Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane.
