How do we search for something when we do not know what it is?
ATLAS and CMS address this question through a broad program of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), placing particular emphasis to long-lived particles (LLPs). Using selected results from LHC Runs 2 and 3, we explore the capabilities of both experiments to probe exotic signatures that may indicate the presence of hypothetical particles.
