Description

Experience tells us that the main ingredient for a successful start up of the SPS is a thorough and well conducted cold check out. Neverteless, the behaviour of certain equipment can only be checked with beam. The number of hardware and software modifications, implemented during a more than one year’s shutdown, imply an extended check-out with and without beam. The classical features to be checked with beam are the alignment and the aperture of the machine, as well as the low level RF. After a long shut down a few more iterations with beam measurements can be necessary in order to find a healthy and clean accelerator. The start-up with beam will have to be performed with new consoles, new software, modified orbit pickups, modified timing and modified interlocks. Parts of all this can only be tested with beam.
