Overview of the course

Overview of the EGEE project and the gLite middleware The lecture gives a short introduction to e-science and the EU-funded <a href="http://www.eu-egee.org/">EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE)</a> project and the <a href="http://glite.web.cern.ch/glite/">gLite Grid middleware</a> being maintained and further developed by EGEE. GLite enables "virtual computing" across administrative domains, so that resources can be shared and orchestrated. The EGEE project is establishing a major international Grid infrastructure to support collaborative research, engineering, public service.

Security and certificate management The talk introduce the basics of the security infrastructure underlying the EGEE grid and demonstrates the end users' viewpoint namely managing long term grid certificates and short term proxy certificates.

Introduction to GILDA and gaining access (talk and practical) Resources and services of the <a href="https://gilda.ct.infn.it/">GILDA grid</a> will be used during the training course. The session introduces the GILDA infrastructure and explains how to access GILDA during and after the training course. GILDA is used by several EU founded projects for training, dissemination and prototyping grid applications.

Simple job management (talk and practical) The talk and related practicals introduce the concepts of managing jobs with gLite command line tools. The "Job Description Language" (JDL) and the capabilities of the Workload Management Service will be among the topics to be covered. JDL is used to specify the parameters and requirements of jobs to be submitted to the Workload Management Service.

Complex job management ( practical) The WMProxy component of gLite will be introduced and the way it enables the execution of job collections, job workflows and parametric jobs.

Data management in EGEE The presentation introduces the services and interfaces provided by the gLite middleare for grid file and metadata management.

Data management practicals Hands-on exercises related to data management - lfc-* and lcg-* commands, GFAL API, AMGA metadata catalog. More complex examples and exercises can be provided for those who are already familiar with the basic concepts.

GANGA tutorial (talk & practical) GANGA is a front end for job definition and management of analysis jobs to run locally and in an distributed environment. It helps in the creation and configuration of analysis job, submission of the jobs and finally monitors job status and take care of saving any output.

R-GMA for monitoring applications (introduction & practical) The <a href="http://www.r-gma.org/">Relational Grid Monitoring Architecture</a> (R-GMA) provides a service for information, monitoring and logging in a distributed computing environment. R-GMA makes all the information appear like one large Relational Database that may be queried to find the information required. It consists of Producers which publish information into R-GMA, and Consumers which subscribe. R-GMA is currently being developed as part of the EGEE project. Previously it was developed as part of the European DataGrid Project. The lecture and related practicals will demonstrate the features and services of R-GMA.

Workflow and parameter study management by P-GRADE Portal (talk & practical) <a href="http://portal.p-grade.hu">P-GRADE Portal</a> provides an intuitive and service rich graphical environment for the development, execution and monitoring of data-driven computational grid workflows and workflow based parameter studies. Services and interfaces of P-GRADE, act as extensions of the gLite middleware and are used on several production VOs of EGEE and different national and international Grids. The lecture and related practicals will demonstrate the workflow and parameter study support services of P-GRADE Portal.

GENIUS grid portal (presentation & demo) GENIUS Grid Portal is a complete production-ready environment which combines the concepts of “user portal” and "science portal". GENIUS offers the following advantages: - it includes support for both single and composite jobs (including workflow); - interactive analysis and web access to personal spooling areas are possible; - environment customizable for the users; - security for data and sessions. Furthermore, due to the modularity and flexibility of EnginFrame, which acts as a general-purpose framework underneath GENIUS, the portal can be easily customized/adapted to interact with other Grids and/or new Virtual Organization using any other kind of middle-wares. GENIUS Grid Portal was develop in the context of the Italian INFNGrid project in collaboration with NICEsrl, and was adopted by European EGEE Project since its begin.

GridWay tutorial (talk & practical) The <a href="http://www.gridway.org/">GridWay Metascheduler</a> enables large-scale, reliable and efficient sharing of computing resources managed by different Local Resource Management systems within a single organization (enterprise grid) or scattered across several administrative domains (partner or supply-chain grid). GridWay is a Globus project, adhering to Globus philosophy and guidelines for collaborative development and so welcoming code and support contributions from individuals and corporations around the world. GridWay has been recently extended with support for the gLite middleware, which feature will be in the focus of this lecture and related practical exercises.

EGEE support for new and existing users The talk will introduce those support groups and community services that provide support for new and existing users of the EGEE grid. These services provide "Operational Support", "Managerial Support" and "Application Support" in order to solve all the potential problems that EGEE users may face during their routine work.
