In the first part of the seminar Dr Pavlov will describe his personal experience in the field of electrical joints for superconducting magnets and electrical power devices. The fundamentals for designing and producing a sound and reliable joint will be recalled, as well as the criteria for selecting adequate materials, solder and fluxes. The most effective heating techniques will be described, and the possible non-destructive examination techniques will be discussed. The preparation of the parts prior to assembly and soldering is essential to achieve high quality; recommendations will be given.
In the second part of the seminar, Dr Pavlov will give his opinion on the procedures currently in force at CERN for the production of electrical joints inside the magnets and in the machine interconnects.
