DRAFT AGENDA - Interoperability across Grids with OMII-Europe components

Europe/Zurich

Description

This is a draft agenda being discussed among OMII-Europe partners with the intention of being tailored for delivery in events during February/March 2008. No date for these events is fixed yet.

To see details of scheduled events, go to http://training.omii-europe.org/.

OMII-Europe is creating standards-based middleware components that will permit e-scientists to access resources runnning on grids that are based on any of the gLite, UNICORE, Globus or CROWN middleware. This course explains the concepts behind the OMII-Europe project, and gives experience of using the components.

This one-day course will interest application developers who need grid interoperabillity - for example, to run high-performance applications on UNICORE/DEISA and trivially parallelisable applications on gLite/EGEE; to access data resources across grids via OGSA-DAI. It will also interest creators of higher middleware services - for example, brokers.

It is assumed that participants will be familiar with the concepts of grid computing. An extended course can be arranged if this is not the case.

The goals of the course are to permit developers to begin to plan for use of the interoperable components provided by OMII-Europe, and to accomplish this by giving participants:

  1. an understanding of interoperability
  2. initial experience of OMII-Europe components based on grid standards
  3. an orientation to be able to further explore these components by use of the OMII-Europe Evaluation Infrastructure
  4. an introduction to the OMII-Europe repository from which the components can be downloaded.

This draft agenda will be tailored for different events, and will also be revised in the light of dates of events and the release schedule fo components
    • 1
      Registration
    • 2
Concepts of interoperabilty and OMII-Europe initiatives
    • 3
Example: gLite/UNCORE Interoperability for drug discovery
A demonstration of interoperability in which the OMIi-Europe Gateway is used to
      • retrieve VOMS credentials expressed in SAML
      • submit jobs to a gLite grid
      • submit jobs to a UNICORE grid
    • 4
security infrastructure based on VOMS with SAML extensions

    • 5
Job execution using OGSA-BES compliant services
      Participants will:
      1. use the OMII-Europe gateway to execute jobs via services running on UNICORE and gLite; these services are compliant with OGSA-BES.
      2. be given an overview of how to create client software for these services.

      Grid Data Services using OGSA-DAI
A practical will introduce the concepts of OGSA-DAI, middleware to expose data resources to grids. These resources may be relational databases, XML-databases, or files - and extensions can be developed to permit OGSA-DAIto support additional resources (such as the Open Geospatail Consortium web services used by the geographical communities). OGSA-DAI supports workflow that executes close to he data, minimising the need for transfer of large amouns of data.

      Next steps
This talk equips participants to continue their exploration of OMII-Europe components, via:
      1. Further training material - both more advanced tutorials that continue from today's talsk and practicals, and introductions to additional aspects and components of OMII-Europe, that cannot be included in an agenda as short as one day.
      2. Evaluation Infrastructures upon which the components are available .
      3. The OMII-Europe repository from which components can be downloaded. This incorporates the ETICS middleware build and test system.
    • 9
Bridging grid islands - the future with OMII-Europe
A brief outline of the future plans for OMII-Europe and its components.
